Birding Chicks on an Endemic Bird Quest

Although Melissa had been birding in Hawaii before I’m thankful she selected me as her guide upon her return.

We started out our morning by the Honolulu airport in search of Eurasian Skylarks, which we landed, in addition to Pacific Golden Plovers, Red-vented Bulbuls, Common Waxbills, House Finches and more before we went west, against rush hour traffic (Thank Goodness!) for a hike to view Oahu Amakihi and Mariana Swiftlet. Melissa saw 2 swiftlets. I think I was too distracted chasing the Apapane along the mountain ridge to get the views she enjoyed. The Oahu Amakihi families were all over the trail and we even saw over 74 Red-crowned Parrots fly right over us! After hiking in Aiea we to went Manoa to chase introduced Salmon-crested Cockatoos and searched Paiko Lagoon for Hawaiian Stilts, Wandering Tattlers, and Ruddy Turnstones, before a quick lunch in Hawaii Kai. After lunch we headed out on another hike for Oahu Elepaio and then shared up close encounters with Hawaiian Coots, Hawaiian Gallinules, and more Hawaiian Stilts on the windward side of Oahu. Since Melissa had never seen Black Noddies I decided to stop for a quick search, although we didn’t get noddies, we did end up with African Silverbills and Chestnut Munias, to finish up our day together on a high note!
I look forward to birding with you again Melissa and will definitely be in touch when I make it back to Arizona! I’m only sorry I didn’t get any pictures with you!
