On September 6, 2017 I took Bruce, a visiting birder from Arizona, out birding around Honolulu. We started off our morning by meeting at Starbucks in Aina Haina with multiple White Tern salutations. From there we experienced an awesome Oahu Elepaio encounter after a short hike and a little patience. There was no need to spend time much time searching for seabirds after we made a quick stop by Lanai Lookout for Red-tailed Tropicbirds. To my amazement we had a tropicbird fly right over us within five minutes of our stop, even though most of them have left the island. From southeastern shore we took the scenic route up the windward side to meet our friend Dick May up on James Campbell NWR for a Bristle-thighed Curlew extravaganza. I continued the keep lists of all the sightings on the refuge and the surrounding aqua ponds for World Shorebird Day.
